A position as postdoctoral fellow is available at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Odense, with a flexible starting date after 1 September 2023. The position is funded for up to two years via a generous donation of the Sygeforsikring Denmark Health Call with possibility for extension.
The Section of Functional Genomics and Metabolism (FGM) is part of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB). We are an inclusive and international working environment with state-of-the-art facilities and strong traditions for collaboration across sections, departments and faculties, and with other educational institutions, municipalities, and industries. The degrees offered by the department include BSc, MSc, and PhD degrees in Biochemistry and molecular biology, Biomedicine and Computational biomedicine.
The position and research pursued in our group:
The employee will be part of Jan-Wilhelm Kornfeld’s research group at SDU, whose overarching aim is to understand the role of Noncoding RNAs like miRNAs in regulation of energy homeostasis and physiology as well as disease-associated molecular processes. In our work we utilize systems -OMICS approaches like (single-cell) RNA-Seq and ChIP-Seq, computational approaches and transgenic mice to identify and molecularly characterize disease-associated miRNAs in adipose tissue and the male germline. We collaborate with clinical scientists to study miRNA regulation in semen from lean and obese human donors.
We are seeking an enthusiastic new colleague with a PhD degree in life sciences (biologist, biochemist, biomedical degree or related) interested in mechanisms of intergenerational epigenetic inheritance of obesity and germline Noncoding RNAs in mouse and humans. This project builds on established workflows and our new colleagues will receive training by an experienced postdoc in relevant in vitro / in vivo techniques. Furthermore, the successful candidate has the unique opportunity to lead publication of larger datasets that were obtained in the group.
Our ideal colleague:
Our future colleague will contribute to other research projects in the group and will therefore constitute being a central part of an ambitious, interdisciplinary, socially active and international team of scientists at all levels (undergraduates, PhD students, permanent staff and postdocs). The ideal candidate is comfortable with one or many of the following:
- Understanding miRNA-dependent molecular processes in metabolic regulation.
- Performing and analysing Next-Generation Sequencing experiments (RNA-Seq, ChiP-Seq, ATAC-Seq).
- Molecular biological techniques (primary adipocyte cell culture, qPCR, WB etc.)
- Isolation of sperm and seminal fluid from mice and phenotyping of mice.
- Assisting in grant funding applications, training of students and guests.
- Contributing to teaching activities in English.
Your education and background:
- A PhD degree in life sciences with a special focus on Noncoding RNA / miRNA biology, physiology, biochemistry and / or chromatin dynamics.
- Experience in metabolically characterizing rodent models of metabolic disease.
- At least one first authorship in a leading journal in the field.
- Proficiency in R and at least one of the main scripting languages (e.g. Python) and/or the willingness to receive training in computational analysis of -OMICS datasets.
- Good collaborative skills, a positive attitude towards basic science and its contribution to society.
- Diligence and intellectual flexibility as required for an academic position.
- An open and positive mind that actively contributes to the infrastructure and the success of the research team.
Deadline: 23 June 2023.
