BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet

The Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in aquatic biogeochemistry and microbial ecology. The position is offered for two years with possibility for extension.

As oxygen concentrations are declining in the ocean, oxygen depleted “dead zones” are expanding, and anoxic events are increasing in frequency, a mechanistic understanding of element cycling in oxygen-depleted waters is needed. The position will contribute to our ongoing efforts to unravel the pathways, dynamics, and controls of microbial carbon, nitrogen, and sulphur cycling in oxygen depleted waters, and how these are affected by environmental change.

A central challenge when working with oxygen-depleted waters is the risk for oxygen contamination during sampling and handling, which may profoundly influence microbial activity and bias results. Hence, in situ approaches are an important next step and the postdoc will have the opportunity to participate in a project centred around the utilization of novel instrumentation for oxygen-contamination-free sampling and incubation. An important task will be the comparison of results obtained in situ to those obtained with natural water samples collected and processed with standard ex situ techniques to identify potential biases. Potential lines of research could include rate measurements using stable and/or radioisotope tracers, molecular ecological analyses and / or instrument development. Within this framework, we will seek to align the project with the candidate’s own research interests.

We seek a candidate with a background in microbial or molecular biology, (bio-)geochemistry, or related fields, and with an aptitude for field work. The selected candidate will be part of the diverse and international Nordcee group at the department and will have the opportunity to collaborate internationally with project associates at the University of Gothenburg, Montana State University, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Deadline: 2 July 2023.
