BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet

The Department of Technology and Innovation (ITI), Faculty of Engineering (TEK) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites candidates to apply for a 3-year fully-funded PhD position in the section SDU Innovation and Design Engineering (IDE). The PhD position is within the research group in Circular Economies and Innovation.

Project context

The scholarship is an integrated part of the project READY funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark. As part of READY, the consortium is establishing an R&D Factory on VIA's campus in Herning. The vision of READY is to convert the textile industry from a linear to a circular economy by enabling textile-to-textile recycling.

The research group will develop new designs that are both sustainable and long-lasting, and finally the researchers will develop new circular business strategies and models. The entire value chain within textile production is thus included in the READY project.

The partners in READY are VIA University College, Technological Institute, Lifestyle & Design Cluster, Royal Danish Academy, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and Aarhus University. In addition, the following companies participate in the project: Bestseller, Kvadrat, Nybo Workwear, Sontex Tekstil, Kjellerup Væveri, HAACK Recycling and Textile Change.

Job description

The focus of the PhD candidate will be on the SDU tasks related to the material driven design approach to the experimentation process of textile-to-textile recycling and the facilitation of new circular business model strategies moving from a linear to a circular economy. The process of the evaluation of sustainability will be data-driven based on life cycle assessment and the sociotechnical analysis will be conducted in collaboration with Technological Institute.

It is imperative to look at some of the challenges related to the materials and compositions to bring that knowledge back from manufacturing into the early innovation process, as a large part of products' environmental footprints are especially related to selection of materials, composite and assembling. The candidate will gain expert knowledge in materials driven design and new business model strategies for Circular Economies for the textile industry.

The position is available from 15 August 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. Place of work is SDU Campus Odense with some traveling.
